Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses clear, custom-molded aligners to straighten misalignment gradually. The treatment works similarly to traditional metal braces by gradually shifting teeth into place. However, unlike metal braces, Invisalign aligners are removable. You take them out to eat and to perform your dental hygiene routine. The aligners are also clear, so they aren’t as noticeable as metal braces.

If you think you might be a good candidate for Invisalign aligners or want to learn more about the treatment, here’s what you need to know about how to get Invisalign.

Initial Consultation

Your Invisalign journey begins with your consultation. During this consultation, you’ll discuss whether you’re a good candidate for the treatment, the cost of the treatment, your current dental health, and anything else you need to know about the process.

Once you decide to proceed, you’ll undergo 3D imaging and scanning. These digital scans help your orthodontist create a treatment plan. Invisalign offers customized treatment plans based on each patient’s dental structure and needs.

First Set of Aligners

Following the initial consultation and scanning, you’ll receive your first set of aligners, and your treatment will begin. Your aligners are custom-designed based on the 3D scans taken of your teeth, but this doesn’t mean the first set will be a perfect fit. You’ll revisit your orthodontist to have your first set of aligners fitted correctly and to review how to wear, clean, and care for the aligners throughout the entire process.

Wearing the Aligners

In most cases, patients wear their aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours each day, removing them only to eat. During your initial consultation, you’ll have discussed the commitment required by Invisalign and determined if wearing the aligners most of the day fits your schedule.

Over time, Invisalign aligners gradually shift teeth into place. Each new set of aligners shifts teeth closer to your end goal. The gradual shift is very similar to traditional braces, but with Invisalign, you can periodically remove the aligners.

Most patients switch to new aligners about every one to two weeks. Your orthodontist will review how alignment progress is tracked over time. This way, you and your doctor know that Invisalign is working as scheduled, and they can determine if any adjustments are needed.

Checkups

Most patients visit their orthodontist every six to eight weeks during the Invisalign process. These visits aim to ensure that the adjustment is progressing as expected. If there are any issues with progress, the orthodontist may adjust the treatment plan.

Occasionally, patients experience mild issues with their aligners. These checkups are also an opportunity to address any problems and make adjustments that make the process as comfortable and convenient as possible.

Oral Hygiene

Your orthodontist will review patient expectations and responsibilities during your initial visits. They’ll also likely remind you of what you’ll need to do to ensure optimal success with your treatment when you go for follow-up visits. In most cases, caring for Invisalign liners is similar to caring for your natural teeth.

You’ll need to make aligners care part of your daily routine dental care. This includes cleaning both your teeth and the aligners. During your time with Invisalign, you’ll want to continue your usual routine dental care, including brushing and flossing. You should also avoid consuming foods and beverages that can stain the aligners (or your teeth!).

Finishing Up

Once you finish your initial set of aligners, your orthodontist will make minor adjustments, if needed, to your treatment plan. Sometimes, one or more additional aligners are required to complete the process. Your final aligners are used to perfect your teeth and create the smile you’ve dreamed of.

At this point, you have finished with your aligners, and you’ll move on to wearing retainers. As the name suggests, retainers “retain” your perfect dental alignment. There are fixed and removable retainers, both of which have pros and cons.

The former are permanent wires attached to the back of the teeth, providing constant support to maintain alignment. The latter option, removable retainers, on the other hand, can be taken out for cleaning and eating. However, you must wear them regularly to prevent teeth from shifting to their original position.

You and your orthodontist will discuss your specific needs and determine which option is best for you. During this time, you’ll also discuss how often you’ll need to wear the retainers and what type of follow-up care you will need in the future.

Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign is a great option for anyone who wants to straighten their teeth for cosmetic, dental health, or both purposes and who doesn’t want traditional metal braces. Often, this is an adult, but there are situations in which Invisalign is appropriate for younger people.

The benefits of Invisalign include:

  • Nearly invisible: Invisalign aligners are clear and discreet.
  • Removable: You remove your aligners to eat, drink, brush, and floss.
  • Comfortable: Aligners are more comfortable than metal braces because they are made from smooth plastic.
  • No eating restrictions: You remove your aligners to eat, so there are no limits on sticky or chewy foods.
  • Convenient oral hygiene: When eating, you remove your aligners to brush and floss your teeth, meaning you don’t have to navigate around wires and brackets like traditional braces. Better oral hygiene also reduces your risk of cavities and gum disease.
  • Customized: Aligners are custom-made to fit your teeth for a snug, effective fit.
  • Fewer orthodontist visits: Invisalign patients visit the orthodontist about once every two months, less than they would with traditional braces.
