Unsurprisingly, gum disease and gum recession are major problems for many people. According to the Canadian Dental Association, seven out of 10 Canadians will develop gum disease at some time in their lives.
Gum disease is a condition marked by red, swollen gums that bleed easily upon probing. In a majority of cases, gum disease develops due to poor oral hygiene and can eventually cause gum recession and then tooth loss.
What is Gum Recession?
Gum recession refers to gum tissue pulling away from the teeth. When this occurs, the roots of the tooth are exposed, which can lead to infection of the tooth pulp. For patients with gum disease, the gums will recede due to inflammation and infection.
Other common causes of gum recession include:
-
- Bruxism — or grinding or clenching the teeth
- Genetics
- Aggressive brushing or flossing
- Dental trauma
- Abnormal tooth positioning
Pinhole Surgical Technique: A Solution for Gum Recession
Receding gums don’t just put your dental health at risk, but they also impact the appearance of your smile. When patients experience gum recession, their teeth will appear longer and the root of the tooth can even become exposed.
Treating this issue sooner rather than later will minimize the dental risks associated with gum recession. Here at Dr. Younes Dental Care, we now offer a simple effective solution — Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST™). Dr. Younes completed his certification in Alhambra, California to offer this solution for patients who want a less invasive treatment than traditional gum grafting.
So, what is the Pinhole Surgical Technique and how can it treat your gum recession?
This treatment is performed by using a needle to make a small hole in the existing gum tissue. Using this pinhole and specific tools, the gum tissue is gently loosened. Dr. Younes will then use special instruments to expand and slide the gum tissue to cover the exposed tooth root.
Pinhole surgical technique differs from traditional gum grafting technique because instead of using donor tissue or soft tissue grafts, the procedures involves simply adjusting the existing tissue.
